Ohio-Indiana FULKERSONS
from Virginia

VA flag

Greetings,

We are members of the Ohio-Indiana Fulkersons who cannot yet be integrated into the Dirck Holgerson story of the family, as recounted in this web site and in the works of Laila Fulkerson Thompson and others. We have identified our earliest ancestor as Richard Fulkerson, cooper and farmer. His gravestone indicates a 1765 birth. Unfortunately, we do not encounter records of the living Richard until 1800, when he shows up in the court records of Shenandoah County, Virginia.
A necessary NOTE about tracking Richard through the years:

The Marriage Index at the Rockingham Co VA courthouse lists their marriage as "Clara Moore and Richard Fulkerson (Ferguson)" on 22 Jan 1801. The Virginia Valley Records by John W. Wayland reports this marriage as "Richard Furguson and Clara Moore" and this is repeated in Vogt & Kethley's Rockingham County Marriages.

Richard witnessed a manumission in 1800 in Shenandoah Co VA, signing himself "Richard Falkerson." An undated lawsuit in Chalkley, Vol. II, p 69: "Benj. Fulkerson of Shenandoah vs Andrew Moore of Shenandoah-- O.S. 27; N.S. 9-- Richard Fulkerson, brother of Benjamin, married Andrew's sister, and Benj. debauched another sister." In the 1810 Rockingham census he was Richard Fulkenson.

When he witnessed a land conveyance in Greene Co. OH on 5 Mar 1816, he was Richard Fulkerson. In the Greene Co., OH census for 1820 he was Richard Fulcusson, in 1830 he was Richard Fulkeson, and in 1840 he was R. Fulkison.

Over the next 16 years, he and his brother, Benjamin (unknown birthdate), marry sisters (Clara and Mary Moore), begin families, buy and sell land, and leave Virginia for Ohio (Benjamin in 1814; Richard in 1816). Benjamin settled in Liberty Township, Butler County, Ohio. Richard came to Spring Valley Township, Greene County, Ohio. We can track most of Richard's lineage up through the 1800's. Several lines can be brought up to the present. Two of Richard's children migrated to Indiana, with a number of their descendants returning to western Ohio.

We have a great deal of information about Richard's line (much less of Benjamin's). Our primary challenge is that we have no knowledge of these boys' parents, siblings, or origins. Therefore, we can not link to the standard Fulkerson family story, or prove a separate European lineage. We have read most of the published Fulkerson genealogies and only occasionally find our Fulkerson's misplaced or conjectured into unlikely scenarios. We have encountered a few other "unattached" Fulkerson's, raising the possibility of a "non-Dirck" European heritage. We are willing to share our data; and any help with our basic "disconnectedness" would be appreciated. Click here to e-mail us directly.

Grave of Mary Ann
(Moore) FULKERSON

Descendants of Benjamin Fulkerson (?-1818)
and Mary (Polly) Ann Moore (?-1833)

Benjamin and Mary were married 12 Dec 1801. There is a record of a dispute in the Circuit Court Records, Augusta County, Virginia (Vol. II 1745-1800, page 69), listing "Benjamin Fulkerson of Shenandoah vs. Anthony Moore of Shenandoah" and noting that "Richard Fulkerson, brother of Benjamin married Andrew's sister and Benjamin debauched another sister." They moved to Ohio in 1814 and settled in Liberty Township, Butler Co., Ohio.

moved to Clay County, IL where Mahala died in 1873. An
old letter notes that John moved "back to Indiana" after Mahala's
death. He possibly moved back to Clinton County, Indiana: the 1880 Census shows a John Fulkerson with wife Margaret, both 40, with a son Mila (21, possibly hers, living at Kirklin, Clinton, Indiana.]
